Freelance contributions will be welcome as soon as we work out a “standard-ish” format for our reports. I’m sort of hoping that we’ll inspire others around the place to explore all the pubs in their area and do some reporting for us. We’ll see how it goes.
Question: If per chance one finds himself in a pub that is outside of the target area, and the story of this pub absolutely had to be told, would there provision herein for those words to be published?
No worries there OK. The site is “A beer in every pub”, not “A beer in every pub on our list” 😉 We’ll welcome submissions from people visiting any pub in Australia but we’ll need them in our (yet to be decided) format.
What a fantastic project! I would *love* to assist with some “freelance” work if it is wanted ;o) Now, all we need to do is find a *classic* retro-bus we could cruise around and do some group reporting! How cool would that be? Cruising around from pub to pub in far North QLD in a classic 60’s Bedford or AEC…….*drools*……
coo… love the pubroll. I’m so doing that on my bio!

What an entertaining read Hamish! You write so well, were you in Gibbo’s English class by any chance? Anyway makes me want to go there. Keep the reviews coming.
I agree, I’m glad the phones and stuff survived in the front bar. I was nervous reading your review until I got to that bit because I feared bad news about it. All said and done, the Cyclone might have done that old pub a favour – its never looked so good!
Heard on Radio Geek today that a certain RR is intending to review the Lake Eacham Hotel when it re-opens. Bugger – I was there yesterday and was thinking of doing the very same thing. I have even taken the external pics. However, noting that the RG is going to be playing with wave for the next little while, I might be able to sneak in and ‘win’ this one… how about that, competitive pub reviewing. 🙂
I’ve recently published ‘Scotch on the Bitumen’
People, Places and Pubs on the New England Highway of Australia. (see Amazons and all good bookstores.) It was in part a long, very enjoyable, pub crawl. Ruined my liver but.
If you wanted to use extracts you would be very welcome. Or I can give you a list of the pubs on the Highway in QLD and NSW that I would recommend you visit.
The chef at this tavern is one of the best up and coming off the cuff creators ,he will knock your socks off with any meal you desire to order, go champ.
Tomorrow? My intel has let me down! That would surely be worth the drive to Einasleigh.

What an accurate summation of the Burketown pub! I’ve had a beer there too, and a glass of refrigerated red cask wine (YUM!). It’s a colourful country pub, and the service is very friendly. The meals are BIG, meaty, no-fuss and filling… Not recommended for vegetarians! Thanks for the review 🙂

My Dad helped build the Sunset Tavern! We moved here specially from Victoria to live up here and help my Dads friends build it! I had a great time here like the artical says, catching hermit crabs in an esky, having kiddie competitions to see who could get the most. Plus, we went fishing every night! What a beautiful place, I miss it a lot.
Thanks for posting this blog about “The Age”. My family were part owners from 1970-1974. It was definitely a hotel in those days and I remember the etched glass and entrance foyer well. Even though I was a young child, I remember the bustle on Friday and Saturday nights when the locals would come in for their big night out – have “chicken in a basket” or a “mixed grill”. Great memories! I plan to take my children and show them an important part of my history!
hello blogger, i was reading your posts on The Purple Pub (Normanton, QLD) A Beer In Every Pub and i definitely liked them. 1 thing that i noticed while browsing throughout your blog that some of the links aren’t working and giving error. this makes the reading experience a little bit bad. you’ve a good blog and i will request you to update the hyperlinks so that fascinated people can get all of the details they intend to have. By the way are you on twitter?? i would definitely like to follow you and get revisions in your blog.
I have been coming to Karumba for 16 years and it is the Tavern and sunset and sunrises plus fishing that we come up every year. The lunches and desserts are also on our yearly menu’s plus friendly people, both caravan and locals. I even have adopted a barra at the barra farm to help stock the rivers and creeks with next years barra’s that I catch.
22 Dec 2011; 8:00pm. Came to show my sister how good the food here but was too dissapoointed. Ordered well done steak but brought it back coz of blood is still streaming out of the steak. When we the steak came back, it was burnt and taste like charcoal. My sister did not eat the steak and left the place hungry. I think its a different chef from the one we are used to.
Great comments and photos! My husband and I have been working out here the last few weeks and we’ve had a fantastic time. Unfortunately our Work Holiday visas expire soon, so we’ll be heading out. But this means we get to go to Bali!
There has been a significant deterioration in the quality of service and food at this iconic local pub over the past 2 years. Recently taken over by the managers of the Consortium Nightclub there is obviously little interest in this venue. The quality of food from the kitchen is unreliable and often barely eatable – my partner ended up with food poisoning
It’s a shame when a great venue deteriorates like that. Probably need to put a qualifier on the reviews to the effect that the reviews will time expire after a certain period. Or better still, revisit all the pubs, say annually, and check on their progress!
Not sure about that – would would think it unlikely. As an aside, revisited the Grafton a couple of weeks ago… the bar has had a bit of an upgrade, but the clientele remain largely unchanged!
Have just arrived home after having one of the worst meals ever – both meals were over cooked, the service extremely slow and the bar service almost non existant (one person behind the bar for Sunday lunch?) $65 for two meals and 2 drinks – I remember when the Centen was one of the best venues in Townsville for meals – how things have changed in such a short time – very disappointed and will not be going back
i have worked at the grafton for 3yrs and yes it has had an upgrade in the front bar and our clientele does increase mainly on the weekends. our pub is the more family friendly type pub as we cater alot for children. and as for no aircons in the front bar that is because the regular patrons asked for them not to be put in as we do get a good breeze most of the time. and no you cant stay in either hotel.
I was recently at the centen and had a great lunch and even better dinner. It is under new management and has a new chef. The service was second to none and very friendly. This was my first time there and I would recommend it highly.
went back to the Centen Monday to be sure I wasn’t dreaming the first great meal. No dream this time it was even better. My friend and I thourghly enjoyed our meal and will be going back with even more friends. Great tasting and great value. To the staff and management of the hotel keep up the good work.
As a long term local, the service and food have gone through the floor and the prices have gone through the roof since the new owner took over. The 2 for 1 pizzas on tues night went and the discount vouchers in the letterbox disappeared along with the yearly seafood fest in the carpark. In came fri arve titty girls (across the road from a little girls ballet school!) and all the great previous staff disappeared. The place is a shadow of its former self and I’ve hardly been there since the change of ownership. And French Street is 1930-40s, not 1960s. The hotel was built 1960 when they took some houses away
The isa has the best rooms in Isa, however, despite me being a regular monthly patron and a very decent spender entertaining local industry. The service is TERRIBLE, some staff downright rude and the Indian cooks , the best.
the Isa dining and bar staff need to learn a little about customer service, with the change to new professional owners the level of service has become professionally slow and the atmostphere DEAD and lacking any real character.
The good clean rooms and the much raved about food ! ( i thinks its just ok and again with no real plomp )
the knowledge of wines is almost non existence much like the staffs knowledge of good customer service and appreciation
As a local we attend there often, including the Folk Festival. The ambience is great, the food service excellent. However, the bar service is lacking. Employing backpackers who have no idea what a TED is sets the bar low. However when the bar manager greats local residents and serves them in the line behind you, when you have been patiently waiting for some time has really turned us off. We were regulars, but the experience was very negative. How about you look at your customer service guys. You may not have known us by name, but we are locals and will provide a testimonial to other residents and visitors. Very disappointed!!
G’day! What an interesting pub. Enjoyed a beer there a few weeks ago when a passenger on the Savannah lander. Delighted to meet Emily from Donegal and Amber from Leicester. Cheers to all!
A revisit on Saturday 15 Feb 2014, reveals not a lot has changed at the Aloomba Hotel. The kiddie fences have gone, but the random groove paneling in the lounge bar remains, as does the BP servo-esque facade, and the lovely curved fridge.
On this visit, a splendid Rolls Royce sedan graced the otherwise empty carpark. At the time of the revisit, there were a handful of regulars at the bar chewing the fat on global politics (as you do in a country pub).
There really isn’t a lot that has changed since our first visit back in 2009…. the beer was cold and tasty, and well, thats about it. But is there any more that should be expected?
Hi there, I was just wondering if anybody would remember the night of New Years Eve 2009/2010 at The Fishery falls Hotel, I have been trying to remember the name of the Band that played there that night. Any info would be VERY much appreciated. Thank you in advance.
Had a beer battered barra burger it was overcooked that much it was like rubber and oil was just running out of the batter will not be going back to the centenary again too hit and miss wheather you are going to get a descent meal if you cant get a burger right what hope have they got cook a proper meal then
You didn’t mention that something DID happen about 20 years ago. They filmed “All Men are Liars” in 1995, starring John Jarrett and Toni Pearen, primarily around the Criterion Hotel in South Johnstone. It was a great little road flick.
Love the idea. I wish you had made it down to Home Hill to the Crown Hotel, locally known as “Bonke’s”. We have a sign that says “Bonke’s beer is best” and Gough Whitlam requested a Bonkes beer on his visit to Home hill in the 70s. Now after 48 years in our family and 13 years in my Uncles family, the 101 year old hotel is no longer ours. So I can no longer tell you stories of old and know who you are asking about when you come back to visit many years later. That last link has finally broken.
My father and I have been a guest at the Station Hotel on many occasion, Keith and Dulcie have always made the stop a pleasurable and friendly one. Highly recommended and looking forward to my next visit!
We stopped by this hotel on the the way home from Josephine falls today to get lunch and a cold beer. Beer was ice cold, reasonable price too, but when it came to the meal well you could have grown a beard waiting for it to arrive. It took from 1.30 to 2.30pm to make a fish and chips and a bacon & egg sandwich and there was only about 20 people there. Would be nice if they told you b4 you order that this was the wait time. Food was okay I guess when it did finally come.
This is a great pub if you want a BURNT Chicken Scnitzel and overcooked chips. And to go with that an adamnent statement by the manager that we always eat our scnitzels like that. Me I won’t be eating or drinking anything at this joint again. And I would whole heartedly recommend that no-one else does either. The Caravan Park adjacent (nt owned or operated by the rude buggers from the Pub) is a great stop over. Clean and cheerful. The Pub, clean and very dowdy, and burnt tucker.
We were “The Boss and Mrs Ken”, lease of the Albert Hotel 1979-1981. A wonderful experience we have never forgotten. Our children, Russell, Todd and Deanne continue to reminisce about their time in the Gulf…it is the place so different from our city life we had left behind…..We lived upstairs in the old pub. The kids attended the local school until high school when the boys went to All Souls Charters Towers. Many happy memories from that time.
